Refrigerator Features That Matter
A quick guide to the features worth paying for — and the ones you can skip.
Ice & water
In-door dispensers are convenient but eat freezer space and are a common repair point. An internal ice maker keeps door shelves free. No plumbing nearby? Look for a model that makes ice without a water line, or skip it.
Finish
Fingerprint-resistant stainless hides smudges far better than plain stainless. Black stainless and white are easier to keep clean. Match your other appliances.
Organization
Adjustable/fold-away shelves, a full-width deli drawer, and gallon door bins make a fridge far more usable day to day than raw cubic feet alone suggest.
Efficiency & noise
An ENERGY STAR label saves money over a 10–15 year life. Inverter compressors run quieter and steadier — worth it in open-plan kitchens.
Smart features
Wi-Fi, touchscreens, and interior cameras are nice-to-haves, not deal-makers. Buy them if you'll use them; don't pay a big premium for a screen you'll ignore.
Warranty
Check the sealed-system (compressor) warranty specifically — it's the costliest part to repair.
Frequently asked questions
For a plumbed ice maker or door dispenser, yes - you need a nearby cold-water line. If you don't have one, add one or choose a model without a dispenser. Some units offer a manual-fill ice maker that needs no plumbing.
