How to Measure for a New Refrigerator

Five minutes with a tape measure prevents almost every fit problem. Measure the opening — not the old fridge — then check the path to it.

The opening

  • Width — measure at several heights; use the narrowest.
  • Height — floor to the underside of any cabinet above.
  • Depth — wall to the front edge of the counter.

Add clearance for airflow

  • About 1″ on each side and 1–2″ on top.
  • An inch or two behind for coils and the water line.
  • Room for the door to swing and drawers to pull out fully.
Don't forget the route. Measure every doorway, hallway, and turn between the delivery door and the kitchen. Many full-size fridges are ~36″ wide and need doorways of at least ~33–34″ clear (handles can often come off to gain an inch).
